Port Blakely is looking for a decisive individual to manage our NW Oregon Tree Farm near Molalla, Oregon. Join us as a lead decision-maker in the management of over 30,000 acres of high-quality timberlands. You will be responsible for the planning and budgeting of harvest and road construction, along with successful implementation of these plans. You will oversee log sales and managing relationships with our many stakeholders and customers (internal and external our company). Join a team of dedicated professionals in Harvest Operations, GIS, Fisheries and Wildlife, Silviculture, Technology and Finance that will all provide their expertise to help make you successful. Our Oregon tree farm is managed with the prescriptions of our Stewardship Agreement with the Oregon Department of Forestry and will soon be included in a Federal Habitat Conservation Plan with USFWS. You will report to our Director of Operations.

Port Blakely manages forestlands in the Pacific Northwest of the United States and New Zealand.

What you’ll do:

  • Maintain an ongoing 5-year tactical timber harvest plan.
  • Lead the implementation of the 5-year harvest plan including harvest engineering, road location, construction and maintenance, and logging in a way that matches our high standards of conducting this type of work.
  • Assure contract compliance with a variety of different types of contractors including logging, road building, surveying, and labor.
  • Be the primary contact for our log buying customers, negotiate and analyze log sale information, and make informed decisions that are best for the company and good for our customers.
  • Meet our neighbors to help them understand our forestry operations.
  • Assure conformance of our commitments to our Oregon Department of Forestry Stewardship Agreement, the Sustainable Forestry Initiative, and internal and regulatory best management practices.
  • Assure effective administration of internal business functions, including contracts, accounts payable, and budget development for the tree farm.
  • Occasionally conduct tours of the tree farm to inform stakeholders of how we do things.
  • Participate on the Operations Department Leadership team in decision-making regarding department responsibilities.
  • Advise our US forestry leadership team on best steps for improvement of the tree farm.
  • Support other division people in accomplishing their responsibilities on the tree farm.
  • Occasionally travel for training, meetings, and conferences in the Pacific Northwest, including meetings at our Tumwater, Washington forestry office

We’d love to hear from people with:

  • Three+ years of harvest planning and implementation experience
  • A solid understanding of log manufacturing and sorting
  • An understanding of working with independent contractors in road building, logging, and surveying
  • Proven negotiation skills
  • Effective administrative experience to assure logistics, paperwork, and communications are effectively completed
  • Ability to work and operate independently, using sound judgment to make decisions, while juggling multiple competing tasks and demands
  • Experience with LRM, LIMS, ArcGIS, and ForestOps
  • Analytical abilities to inform financial decision making
  • Knowledge of Oregon Forest Practices Regulations
  • Contract compliance expertise
