Celebrating Excellence: Barry Wells Recognized in New Zealand’s MVC Awards
Port Blakely is proud to celebrate South Island Regional Manager Barry Wells, who was named a runner-up in the 2025 Most Valuable Coach (MVC) Awards presented by Competenz, New Zealand’s industry training organization.
The MVC Awards recognize outstanding workplace coaches and mentors across the country who are making a meaningful impact in workforce training and skills development. With more than 220 nominations nationwide, the competition was strong, and Barry’s leadership in the South Island stood out. Barry has been with Port Blakely for 20 years, and anyone who’s worked alongside him knows how much he cares about the team’s safety and growth.
Barry has long been a champion of workplace health and safety and professional development across our New Zealand operations. Under his leadership, team members have earned advanced, nationally recognized health and safety qualifications, and he has supported advanced driver training and specialized on- and off-road courses to ensure staff and crews are equipped to work safely and confidently.
Barry’s impact goes beyond training programs. Whether he’s out in the field supporting contractor teams or inviting speakers who inspire at our safety meetings, he makes people feel heard and valued. Team members know that when they raise ideas or concerns, Barry listens and follows through. He sets high standards, but his trust and support are equally important.
Reflecting on the recognition, Barry shared: “Training and safety go hand in hand. It’s rewarding to see people grow their skills and confidence, and that’s something we continue to prioritize across our South Island teams.”
We’re thrilled to see Barry recognized on the national stage. His steady leadership and genuine care for our teams have shaped what it means to work at Port Blakely.
