Supporting local teachers and schools

Port Blakely supports learning activities and projects that align with our Environmental Education Program through four annual grants worth $500 each. Schools that participate in Port Blakely's Environmental Education Program are eligible to apply for a grant.

2025 Grant Recipients:

  • Novel Studies and Research Projects to Explore Pacific Northwest Ecosystems: Students will deepen their understanding of salmon, their habitats and regional ecosystems through novel studies and research. (Kelsey Emerson, Roosevelt Elementary, Olympia SD, WA)
  • What Makes Energy Renewable – OMSI Lab Program and Field Trip: Following a visit to Port Blakely, students will investigate renewable energy sources and their role in Oregon’s climate through a hands-on lab and field trip experience with the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. (Kimberly Kent, Carus Elementary, Canby SD, OR)
  • Life Cycles Make the World “Go Round”: Students will study three interrelated life cycles: Students will study the life cycles of Douglas-fir trees, salmon, and wolves to understand nature’s continuous process of growth and renewal. (Laurie Raben, Pioneer Elementary, Olympia SD, WA)
  • Burke Museum Resource Boxes for Outdoor Education – Students will engage with educational kits from the Burke Museum that explore natural history, tribal cultures and the history of Washington State. (Jenny Hoffman, Boston Harbor Elementary, Olympia SD, WA)
  • Evergreen Forest Outdoor Classroom Project: Students will design and construct an outdoor learning space on the school grounds. The project emphasizes sustainable building practices and native plantings, giving students the opportunity to apply science and environmental stewardship in a real-world context.   • Hooked on Coho: Students will raise Coho salmon from eggs in a classroom aquarium while exploring the ecological and cultural importance of salmon and other natural resources. (Jennifer Rogerson, Orin Smith Elementary, Chehalis SD, WA)
